WMExperts have put the Palm Treo Pro up against the AT&T Fuze to see who comes out the champion and it looks like the AT&T Fuze won by the mere skin of its teeth, as the saying goes.
So, how do these two devices measure up to each other?
WMExperts has posted up an unboxing, first impressions, and a hands on comparison video for Palm’s new Treo Pro. It’s a great look at the Treo Pro in action.
The Treo Pro features a flush touch-screen, built-in WiFi, GPS, a standard, 3.5mm headset jack, microUSB connector.
The first consumer feedback reports are coming in about Palm’s Treo Pro and sadly so far there are more good than bad. Complaints that the keyboard is too small, that, like previous versions of the Treo, there’s no real power down option, it’s not as fast as many users would like. Many users are complaining that the 2MP camera, though good during the day, is less than quality in dim light. This doesn’t surprise me, though. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a 2MP that could hold up to low light conditions - especially a camera phone.
On the plus side, the speakerphone is said to be awesome, reception quality is great, and many are reporting battery life to be decent too.
The Palm Treo Pro is now being shipped out to those who pre-ordered it via the Palm website.
A tipster over at Engadget Mobile has received an email confirming that his unlocked, $549 obsidian-black Treo is in the mail. Even better — said tipster also claims that Palm has expedited the order overnight instead of the 6-10 day standard shipment originally selected. Sweet!
No surprise here: Earlier today Palm finally announced, officially, the Treo Pro that many of us have been lusting after. It’s got everything - GPS, 2 megapixel camera, WiFi, 320×320 pixel touchscreen, HSDPA, Bluetooth, and a microSD memory slot.
And though no U.S. carrier partners have been announced, it looks like the Treo Pro will be available in Europe (Vodafone, O2) and Australia (Telstra) some time this coming September.
A few years ago Palm was at the top of its game and had thousands of applications. But quickly developers started leaving and going to the more stable Windows Mobile. It had little to do with the operating system or zen of Palm or whatever. It had to do with the fact that the OS was becoming fragmented and becoming difficult to deal with as each device that came out broke this or that. You no longer were writing software for the Palm, but instead for the Palm Zire, or the III or whatnot. Each device had a custom PalmOS that required some custom coding for. Mostly due to HTC, Windows Mobile is slowly going that same way. In the past we could write to the Windows Mobile spec and mostly everything worked on any device. Now HTC is doing so much custom stuff and breaking so many things its ridiculous.
SplashData has released SplashMoney for the PocketPC, letting you see how poor you are in real time:
From their website: Manage your money anytime, anywhere. Connect to your online bank from your desktop computer or wireless handheld and download transactions directly into SplashMoney. Create budgets and then track and analyze your spending with customizable reports and charts. Synchronize your phone with your desktop PC to Includes free desktop companion software for Windows.
It’s $30 with no trial, but it looks full-featured. This PocketPC version is new but it is also available for Palm and on the desktop. Maybe we’ll give it try - keep you posted.
Research firm In-Stat is reporting that the world smartphone market will grow by an average of 33% each year through to 2012. In-Stat predicts the strong growth based on several factors:
Softick has announced the release of version 1.20 of their Auido Gateway software for Palm handhelds, reports PalmInfocenter.
The software allows any Bluetooth-enabled Palm OS device to link up to a pair of Bluetooth headphones and listen to any audio played by the handset, from music players to games to audio books. Version 1.20 adds support for AVRCP connections and fast forward and rewind buttons on some headsets, and fixes some problems with mono sound as well as other minor bug fixes.
A company named StyleTap has a demo of Palm applications being run on an iPod Touch, reports PDAStreet.
The company has long offered software to run Palm apps on Windows Mobile devices, and has plans to offer the same functionality for Symbian phones. Now a video has appeared on their website showing off some Palm apps being run on an iPod Touch. The demo is just that, a demo, and is not indicative of any plans to release the software, as they explicitly warn:
This is an EXPERIMENTAL version – it is NOT a product, nor is its presence here a commitment of any kind, express or implied, that StyleTap Inc. will ever release an official version of StyleTap CrossPlatform for Apple iPhone or iPod Touch.
Still, there is a definite possibility of seeing something like this if Apple ever gets around to releasing the iPhone SDK.
Drewski on the post How to fix Internet Connection Sharing on the Blackjack II: I have used the Howard's Forum solution for internet PC tethering however about 2 days after making the changes whenever I just want to surf the net on my BJ II I now get a 403 Access Forbidden error msg. If I power the phone off and turn it on it allows me to surf for about 1 to 2 days before giving me that error again. When I called AT$T they had me change some settings and that fixed the problem but broke my tethering capability. I reinstalled the Howard's Forum solution and got tethering back but now again have the 403 problem again. Any help would be apprciated.
Bambi Blue on the post Diamond J6: Touch Diamond clone available in China: Wow, Bruno - that's awful! A real Touch Diamond would have been nice, heh, but a fake one?! Especially when you're actually expecting the BB Storm!
Though, from what I'm hearing, the Storm isn't the greatest device. But I haven't seen it myself so I can't say for sure.
What did you end up doing with the fake phone? How much did you pay? I'm sorry you had such a rough time - I feel for ya!
Bruno on the post Diamond J6: Touch Diamond clone available in China: I didn't listened my friends and I just both 2 blackberry storm from china (by mail). It was a surprise when I opened the box and discovered that the mobile sent to me was the HTC TOUCH DIAMOND. A bigger surprise was the discovering that it was not a HTC but a clone. In other worlds, I should listen more to my friends. No windows mobile, no e-mail, just a piece of sh.....
Dan on the post Issues with the Windows Mobile 6.1 SMTP patch?: Couldn't send emails any more no matter what I tried so I downloaded and installed the patch.
So far:
I lost all of my email accounts;
tried to set them up again, but when I used the same name for the account, I got stopped by an alert that said that name was already being used by another account;
I picked a new name for the account and completed the setup, after I hit finish, it jumped to the Outlook account that had previously existed and the new account was not listed under mail accounts;
tried this a couple of times;
Did a hard reset, erasing all of my data, which isn't a big deal I have had to do hard resets so often lately there isn't much there;
After the reboot, I set up the accounts successfully, the device randomly powers off;
It is now frozen with a solid green colored screen, which I can do nothing about, it won't even turn off, I am on hold now with my provider's tech support.
This is my experience so far with the Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrade and the SMTP patch
