Motorola’s strategy for success and smartphone development in the current economy

Co-CEO of Motorola

Motorola’s co-Chief Executive Sanjay Jha has been tasked with reviving Motorola’s sales after a serious loss of market share to its competitors Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson.

“One of the worst things is if you go to a company and things are not well but there’s not a sense of crisis. That’s not the case here,” he said Thursday. “People understand that changes need to occur and are very open to changes.”

Microsoft takes aim at Verizon for mobile search and advertising

Palm

Microsoft is looking to get more Windows Mobile smartphones on Verizon as well as dominate its search and ad systems. To do this, Microsoft will either offer cash incentives to Verizon, or give the company a steep discount on software licenses.

Microsoft sees an opportunity to capitalize on the mobile market where it has an edge over Google due to its prevalence in the smartphone market. This strategy makes sense considering Google is dominating desktop search for the foreseeable future.

Although Windows Mobile has missed yearly sales targets as well as market share to competing smartphones, an increase in mobile search and advertising could tip the smartphone wars in Microsoft’s favor.

Iris browser for Windows Mobile by Torch Mobile

One of the great things about Windows Mobile is that the platform will allow for multiple browsers. If you’re unhappy with your iPhone browser, good luck doing anything about it. While most Windows Mobile users will turn to Opera Mobile 9.5 for their mobile web browsing experience, some may prefer to go with Torch Mobile, one of our top 5 mobile browser picks, who have an open-source “webkit” rendering engine (the same as the one used in Safari and Google Chrome) to Windows Mobile.

This browser isn’t recommended for the HTC Touch Diamond because apparently it doesn’t work so well on that device. In any case, it’s always fun trying new browsers and Iris has many features that should make it a worthwhile beta test:

  • Performance
  • Smaller footprint - we’re 10% smaller than beta 1!
  • User interaction improvement
  • Stability
  • Page rendering improvement

Microsoft to continue charging for Windows Mobile

Google and Symbian are moving toward providing their operating systems royalty-free with Google only drawing in money by integrating its services and ad platform. But what about Microsoft? Well, according to Steve Ballmer’s recent chat with Reuters, Microsoft isn’t looking to jump on the free bandwagon any time soon - still charging $8-$15 per phone for the Windows Mobile operating system.

We are doing well, we believe in the value of what we are doing,” Ballmer said. “It’s interesting to ask why would Google or Nokia, Google in particular, why would they invest a lot of money and try to do a really good job if they make no money. I think most operators and telecom companies are skeptical about Google.

What do you think? Are royalty-free operating systems going to be full of hooks or disclaimers? Or is Microsoft just greedy?

Windows Mobile licensing fees to remain intact

Looks like Microsoft plans to keep charging handset makers licensing fees for use of its Windows Mobile operating system, not responding to the free offerings of Google and Nokia, Reuters reports.

Microsoft plans to continue charging licensing fees from handset makers for Windows Mobile operating system and not follow the free offerings of Google and Nokia, reports Reuters. Microsoft charges $8 to $15 per phone, according to research firm Strategy Analytics, which sounds like shockingly high amount for a mobile operating system that’s less than stellar, especially when you could get Android’s decent (but not great) OS for free.

Verizon XV6800 WM6.1 upgrade now available

    Verizon XV6800

While AT&T Tilt users are swooning over their newest Windows Mobile 6.1 update ROM, Verizon’s released its own WM6.1 upgrade, this time for the XV6800 (that’s the HTC Titan for you non-Verizoners). Now don’t get too excited yet - looks like Verizon’s decided to keep GPS functionality all locked up in this otherwise standard upgrade. No Google Maps‘ cool GPS functionality for you just yet, I’m afraid.

    Grab the upgrade here.
