How-to: Get the YouTube app on your Vodafone HTC Touch Pro

Raphael

If you’ve purchased a Vodafone HTC Touch Pro, one of the first things you’ll notice is that there is no YouTube application. This is a shame considering

The eForum team on Vodafone’s help forum had this to say:

I expect the Youtube app has been removed due to the amount of data you could potentially use when streaming videos. I appreciate you can still do it via the web browser, but navigating to the Youtube page in your browser is much more difficult than just loading the app, so it rules out people opening it by accident and running up a large bill.

This is strange for 2 reasons: Vodafone users have access to unlimited data and if you’re buying an expensive smartphone, you surely know about data costs and getting an appropriate plan. Secondly, the YouTube app comes with the HTC Touch Diamond, so why not the Pro?

If you want the app, all you have to do is go here and get the CAB file for the YouTube app.
Remember, you won’t need the HTC Streaming Media CAB file as it comes with the device.

I posed the “unlimited” question to a voda rep a few days ago, he openly said although it’s branded unlimited, it’s actually 500mb a month and they’ll text you when you’re approaching it.

Also, does this work for anyone? I just get connection failed after about 5 minutes.

Wow - 500mb? They don’t know much about your average smartphone consumer’s data use, do they. When their competitors are running around with 6GB plans, and all…

People like bells and whistles, that’s why they’re buying a smartphone to begin with, right? Nuts to them, I say.

(I don’t currently run an HTC Touch Pro, so I can’t help you there. But I am seeing it getting rave reviews in some other forums.)

6gb data package on a uk network?? who told you that crap. not likley, most networks only offer 120mb. 500 is more than enough for the average smartphone user.

We have 6gb plans here in Canada - I guess we’re just spoiled, heh.
